What was the catalyst for starting your business?
Honestly, I would have to say that my age was the catalyst for starting my company. I've always known that I wanted to become this strong, fearless business woman one day. Unfortunately, due to the trials and tribulations of growing up in the Bronx, I developed a complex and began to doubt myself on a very deep level. Those doubts caused my aspirations to lay dormant for much of my young life. On my 31st birthday, I had an epiphany! I found myself engaged to be married, with no set career path ahead of me, and the pitter patter of baby feet off in the distance. I knew that if I was going to do something amazing for myself, I had to do it now! All of a sudden this wave of fearlessness, a feeling I had never experienced before, washed over me, and I knew it was time to bet on myself.
What is the best part about running your own company?
The best part of running my own company is definitely the creative freedom! Not only do I make and design all our of our products by hand, but I also design all of the packaging and labeling materials as well. I'm allowed to fully express myself and my ideas without compromise, and honestly it just feels so darn good to be able to call all of your own shots! I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.
What is one of the most important lessons you've learned in the process of starting your company?
The most important lesson I've learned is that I am human. I will not be able to continue to do everything myself, and that’s okay! I truly believe in the old adage ‘If you want something done right you, you have to do it yourself,’ but that so does not apply to running a successful business. I’ve basically learned that I can't be a control freak anymore. We’ll see how that goes!
Can you walk us through one of your typical days?
There's no such thing as a typical day over here! Everyday is so different, and thank goodness for that! Our product line is growing rapidly, so I always start my day with a specific product in mind and dedicate the day to making and restocking that product. Since this is a home business, I spend a lot of time cleaning and disinfecting my work space each day. I’m definitely looking forward to hiring help with that sometime in the very near future! Right now my biggest daily struggle is trying to find the right work/life balance. It's so important for me to be able to kill it during the day and still get dinner on the table for my family each night.
What advice would you give your younger self?
I would advise my younger self to be brave and to ignore the negative messages and feelings of inferiority. I would remind her that time moves so swiftly, with no regard for regrets or dreams unlived. I would tell her that all of her dreams are feasible, and then I would dare her to follow them. I used to love a good dare!
What goals do you have for your company in the coming year?
My main goal for the coming year is to get out there and work as many craft markets as possible. I had the privilege of working the Queens Night Market here in Jamaica, Queens, and it was such a great experience. I love meeting and conversing with the community and having the opportunity to witness their reaction to my products and receive their immediate feedback. It's priceless!
